At Hilaturas Jesús Rubio, we are immersed in a very special project: the production and yarn manufacturing from Spanish merino wool. Watching this raw material pass through our machines connects us directly with the textile history of our land and reaffirms the value of natural fibres of local origin.
A legacy with history: the “white gold”
Merino wool is no ordinary fibre. Born and raised on the Iberian Peninsula, this raw material became, over the centuries, a true treasure, known as “white gold”. Its value was so incalculable that, for a long time, the export of merino sheep was protected and prohibited under penalty of death.
Its historical origin takes us mainly to Extremadura, where between the 12th and 13th centuries the breeding and selection of livestock began to be refined, laying the foundations for one of the finest, most sought-after and most prestigious fibres on the planet.
From fibre to yarn: the in-plant process
At present, in our factory we are working with this selected batch of merino wool, characterised by an unmistakable, pristine colour from the earliest stages of carding and spinning. As the material moves along the production lines, we confirm each of its extraordinary technical advantages:
- Thermal regulation and natural insulation: A unique ability to maintain thermal comfort by adapting to temperature changes.
- Moisture repellence and resilience: It absorbs internal vapour, repels surface water and easily returns to its original shape.
- Exceptional fineness to the touch: Its small diameter prevents any itchy sensation, making the resulting yarn extremely soft and suitable for wearing directly against the skin.
